Home and Garden show opens today
Following nine months of planning and six months of construction, the 67th annual Cleveland Home Garden Show is ready to open its doors today at the Great Lakes Expo Center in Euclid.
This is the first year the event will be in Euclid, as its previous home was the IX Center in Brook Park.
The event will boast 475 booths and 325 different vendors in the 215,000squarefoot building, said Chris Fassnacht, owner of Expositions Inc., which operates the show.
This past week has been a bit more hectic as preparations had to be made in order to open the doors on time, Fassnacht said.
"We had to do a lot of things last minute," he said. "We had to bring all of the fresh plants and flowers which had been growing at Willoway Nurseries in Avon."
Lastminute preparations also included laying carpet and hanging chandeliers in the 16 interior designer showcasing rooms.
After preparing for the show at the IX Center for so many years, Fassnacht said setting up at a different venue wasn't as difficult as some might think.
"Actually, it was a piece of cake with our show," he said. "We've seen so many different facilities and we understand what it takes to run conventions."
He said the most difficult thing about preparing for the Great Lakes Expo Center was sorting out all the fire and safety issues because fire codes are always changing.
Despite the venue change, he is hoping the show continues its momentum, especially because it's closer to Lake and Geauga county residents. Continued.2
"I think a lot of people were so used to having one convention center in Northeast Ohio and a lot of people were saying this could never happen in Euclid," he said. Speaking of change, this is the first year parking is free, and Fassnacht promises less expensive admission and concession prices.
"We are in the middle of a recession and people want value," he said. "We don't want to gouge people for parking, food and beverage."
Advance sale tickets are $9 and can be purchased at Discount Drug Marts. Admission at the door is $12 while children 12 and younger are admitted free.
The Great Lakes Expo Center is located at 1200 Babbitt Road. The show runs through Jan. 31.2
